WHO WE ARE

Nkuringo Community Conservation and Development Foundation (NCCDF) is an independent non-profit foundation and social enterprise with the interests of locals at heart, and is dedicated to green development, biodiversity and natural resources conservation and climate change adaptation. NCCDF was established in 2000 and incorporated in 2004 as a company limited by guarantee. NCCDF’s membership constitutes of all adults born and living in Nkuringo, Nteko and Rubuguri parishes in the sub-counties of Nyabwishenya and Kirundo of Kisoro District at the most southern tip of South-Western Uganda in the fringes of Southern Sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP), the (Nkuringo Sector). NCCDF is named after Nkuringo habituated Gorilla group which relocated from the forest to Nkuringo valley at the turn of the 21st century. NCCDF was established out of recognition that wildlife and other natural resources were of value in communal areas, and that those resources could be unlocked if local communities were empowered to manage and utilize resources themselves. With the initial support of two partners, International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP), African Wildlife Foundation (AWF) and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), the communities through NCCDF can harness tourism opportunities that exist in and around the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP) and to sensitize communities on conservation and financial management, fundraising, leadership identification, monitoring, and evaluation of community activities.
